This week I had the opportunity to test a fun pattern called the Tumble Tee for Rachael of Imagine Gnats. Color blocking and simple lines - yay! There is so much room for creativity here, which is what I needed because I had two of my husband's shirts to upcycle. If you have ever tried to make men's large shirts into a 9.5 year old girl's dress, you know what a challenge this can be! Sure, would have been WAY easier to just use them to make a baby or toddler dress... but then I realized I don't have any of those anymore! Creative pattern piece placement was necessary but I made it work by using the color blocking for the back of the dress match in the front too (her pattern actually has an option to have the front sewn with 2 long vertical pieces but I did not have the length needed to do this). I love this option though, and love the results. Her pattern was very easy to piece together and use. While I have sewn some complicated dresses and quilts, I have limited experience with knits. I think I spent 2 hours from printing off the pattern to finishing clipping threads. And this included puzzling over how to maximize the men's shirts. This is a pattern well worth having in your bag of tricks! I have seen some C-U-T-E dresses made for babies from it too! Now my girl and I are looking forward to thrifting to find some fun tshirts to upcycle into more tumble tees. What do you think?
